PVI has submitted on the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Amendment Bill. We are concerned as the proposed changes:
Weaken Te Mauri o Rongo, reducing the focus on shared values, cultural safety, and accountability across the health system
Reduce the role of partnership boards and community voices in decision-making, meaning services may not meet local needs
Centralise governance under the Minister, prioritising targets over the real needs of children, families, and diverse communities
Lower standards for cultural competence and community engagement, which may compromise quality of care
Our submission calls for:
Retaining Te Mauri o Rongo as a binding framework for values and equity
Strengthening community and partnership board input to ensure services meet local needs
Ensuring health targets and governance support real patient and whānau outcomes
Mandatory training in cultural competence, accessibility, and equitable care for all health professionals
Any reforms to health must protect the rights and wellbeing of children and whānau, particularly those facing disability and systemic barriers.
